This is the blue power light coming off of one of my speakers. It's a very small, dim light, but at night it seems like Susan's refrigerator light example. It becomes the brightest light I've ever seen and if I want to listen to music, it has to be covered.
Interesting observations, and very relatable by most people. I have a very very tiny light in my smoke detector in my bedroom. During the day you can barely even see it, but some nights when it's really dark it will distract me from sleeping. It's all about relative brightness.
